Home Technologies that Build on the DIYer

Home Technologies that Build on the DIYer

On the heels of CES, the highly anticipated annual global stage for next-generation innovation, we noticed an intriguing trend. While DIY solutions over the past decade have competed head-on with those in the custom-installation market, they are now growing at breakneck speed, becoming easier to install and easier to use, and spreading into other categories throughout the home. Google Nest and the Google platform for example, have been expanding their capabilities year after year as has Alexa. Not only can you perform searches in Google, but you can schedule appointments, make dinner reservations, access your home’s intercom, view web cameras, look up recipes and summons your kids all with your voice. So, where does DIY and fully integrated smart home control systems intersect?

Artificial Intelligence Gets Integrated

Consumers have readily embraced their hands-free environment, calling on their voice-controlled interface to turn on the lights, start the oven and crank up their favorite playlist. Of course, the interface is just that, an interface and whatever you’re wanting to control needs to be voice capable. With so many products on the market, that’s not a problem, but ideally, it’s an advantage if all the disparate technology applications work together as one.

Of all the emerging technologies making a splash at the show, one of the most impressive is the consumer grade surveillance camera. We’ve all seen the hilarious TV Ads showing would-be criminals getting shouted away, the porch pirates getting nabbed – even All State’s “Mayhem” got in the doorbell camera action. Some of these simple solutions have now evolved to include AI, meaning they provide facial recognition. That’s significant. Some feature attractive entry price points and sophisticated GUIs as well. The challenges for these cameras however are scalability for whole-home coverage, image resolution for day/night capture and their ability to integrate into a home’s system, allowing them to work in harmony with its exterior lighting control and security monitoring system.

The Impact of the Consumer Electronics Show

From high-tech robots to stunning walls of 8K imagery, this year’s consumer electronics show had its share of fanfare, but it also showcased some important, lifestyle-enhancing home technologies. Consumers gain awareness of the incredible technologies that are now in their reach. Their adoption drives demand and fuels innovation. It’s an exciting time to be a technology solutions provider.
